Pre-reading activities:

 First of all let’s listen to a short passage carefully and answer some questions.

And then listen to the tape again. Ask some students to answer the questions with their own experiences.

4) What was the response from President Clinton?

5) What was the response from scientists and others?

6) Why would anyone want to clone a human being?

Step2 Text Analysis of Passage A

  1. Main Idea: When a world with human clones was suddenly within reach, people’s reactions to it were strong and varied. They puzzled over a number of questions about the legal and moral implications that had arisen from cloning.

  2. Text Structure: The passage can be divided into 4 parts.

    Part I (para1) With the success of cloning an adult mammal, the world was suddenly brought into the reality of human cloning.

    Part II (paras 2-3) This part is about the world’s strong and immediate responses in the wake of Wilmut’s announcement.

Part III(paras 4-18) This part offers complete or partial answers, from the up-to-date knowledge, to the six questions on the legal and moral implications of cloning.

Part IV(para 19) This part is intended to reaffirm the author’s opinion that, although the list of questions could go on,  people are just beginning to wonder about the future of the world after cloning.

  1. Main Idea: The author gives the reader a detailed exposition of what prenups are, who needs prenups, what points to be taken care of before signing prenups, and how people evaluate prenups.

  2. Text Structure: The passage can be divided into 4 parts.

    Part I (paras1-4) A general introduction of prenups.

    Part II (paras 5-8) This part is about who needs prenups.

Part III (paras 9-14) This part deals with what points should be taken care of when one goes into a premarital agreement.

Part IV (paras 15-16) This part is about possible evaluations of prenups.

Period three :

Step 1 : Going on explaining the text , including words , phrases, and important sentences and special language usages

Teaching methods : scan, report ( ask the student to scan the text and find out some of the above useful expressions) ,explaining ,

Step two: make comments on the whole text, including writing skills, figures of speech, usage of words, phrases, paragraphs, as well as the organization of the whole text.

Step three: offering students some suggestions to learn section A$C by themselves.

Step four : assigning new tasks and exercises.
