I. Introduction

 

Note on “the problem of coinages in Chinese learners’composition”

This paper mainly probe  problems of coinages in Chinese learners’ composition. By analyzing the statistics conducted in the paper , author  also attempts to find whether there is a certain  relationship between the learners’ English proficiency and the frequency of coinages. What attitudes should be taken by teachers who have been teaching foreign languages and what corresponding teaching stratigies should be taken to deal with these problems.

This paper deals with the problem of coinages in Chinese learners composition. Our study is based on a sub_corpus of Chinese Learner English Corpus which includes more than 2000 learners compositions. We apply the corpus approach and MicroConcord to concord the coinages in the data. By classifying and analyzing the coinages, we attempt to find whether there are certain patterns in the coinages, and if there are, what their possible causes are. We have found that there are indeed some patterns and there are indeed some patterns and there five common methods used by Chinsese learners to coin a new word: (1) affixation (in cluding prefix and suffix; (2) componding (3) plural forms of nouns (4) adding-ed, -ing, -s to the verbs;(5)transtion of syntactical functions of words. By analyzing the statistics , we also attempt to find whether there is a certain relationship between the learners’ English proficiency and the frequency of coinages. It is concluded that some of the coinages are caused by interlingual transfer , and some by intralingual transfer. In classroom teaching , teachers should treat different kinds of coinages accordingly instead of criticizing the learners for their errors.

 

II. Reason of my choice

 

In Ningxia Teacher’s University , I have been teaching major students intensive English course and English writing. Because students’ target language vocabulary and linguistic knowledge is limited, in the process of writing they will certainly be applied to the native way of thinking,

unconsciously apply the rules of mother-tongue language into the target language. As a result, When they can not find the appropriate equivalents in English , They  often make mistakes in grammar , sentence, vocabulary etc., including cion new words based on  existing Chinese .When I read or correct student’s writing I quite often find mistakes like as follows:   (just a few examples)

Vocabulary and grammar:

Thank you for your invite.[invitation]

 I’m pleased to receive [accept] your invitation.

 We will visit [the] Great Wall, [the] Summer Palace with you.

 She sing well .

I drink much waters

Because of careless, I didn’t pass the exam. 

I sing good.

Sentence structure:

To learn the English language well is very importment.

The man was the only responsible person for the result.

Though they were busy , but they helped us a lot.

The fast developing speed of pollution makes so much water insuitable for drink and use

 We can enwide our knowledge and enlarge our eyewide from doing one

perfect part-time job we do

 To pass time, sometimes you can take part in some public-meeting and

introduce yourself to others; at others you can find a job in your free-time

I have read a litte more papers about how to teach students avoid errors in grammar and sentence structure, but I have read a little less experience of how to teach students avoid errors in coinages arbitrarily .as we known, Writing holds a very important position in the second language teaching. With the teaching of writing skills a major objective of current communicative language teaching writing is embraced in the linguistic activities, One of the biggest challenges to language teachers is to find effective ways of teaching writing skills. IAt present the teaching of writing is still a weak area in the second language teaching. The improvement of the teaching of writing has been of great interests to me and to all teachers who teach writing, I think. I hope the paper can teach me more skilles in Egnlish writing teaching so as to to enable my students to improve their writing skills, express their thoughts and emotion at ease, produc lucid and succinct English compositions.

How to judge errors or mistakes , First, observing  learners deviation of continuity in same language. they belong to the error If they are continual. if do not have continuity, sometimes, they belong to the mistakes; second, try to allow learners to correct their own language deviation. If not be corrected, they belong to errors, if they can successfully correct,  they belong to the mistakes. Teachers can observe students’ coinage on the base of  these two methods to   identify errors and mistakes. For the former, teachers must  point out , interpret and correct,, while the latter can be ignored. In addition, according to  different coinage of  students, teachers can take time to give extra teaching to help students sum up the law by supplying some appropriate exercises. Finally students should  make their own analysis and  suammarize knowledge as possible as they can..
