(I) Second Language Acquisition (cf. Ellis, R. 1985. Understanding Second Language Acquisition. 上海:上海外语教育出版社. )

1.               Key Issues in Second Language Acquisition (pp.4-18 )

   1) What is the distinction between L1 and L2? (p.5)

   2) How do you understand the distinction between second and foreign language? (p.5)

   3) How do you understand the distinction between language learning and acquisition?(p.6)

   4) What is SLA?

   5) What is the distinction between competence and performance? (pp.5-6)

6) Behaviorist learning theory (p.12, p.13, pp.20-23, p.128, p.283, p.293) and the mentalist theory of language learning (pp.43-47, p.128, p.300) are two major learning theories. Try to introduce them.

   7) In your opinion, what is the role of the first language in SLA? (pp.6-8)

   8) Try to introduce contextual variation in language-learner language. (pp.9-10)

   9) Try to introduce individual learner differences. (pp.10-12)

10)What do you think of the role of input in the process of SLA? (pp.12-13)

11)What do you know about the learner processes? (pp.13-15)

   12) What is the framework for investigating SLA? (pp.16-18, pp.275-276)

2. The Role of the First Language (pp.19-41 )

   1) According to Contrastive Analysis, does the L1 play a negative role in SLA? Why? (pp.20-27)

   2) Why and how was the Contrastive Analysis hypothesis criticized? (pp.27-33)

   3) In recent years, what has been the reappraisal of the role of the L1 in SLA? (pp.33-40)

3. Interlanguage and the ‘Natural’ Route of Development (pp. 42-74)

   1) Try to introduce the interlanguage theory. (pp.47-51)

   2) Errors of language learners are treated differently by the behaviorists and the mentalists. How different are their views concerning errors? (pp.51-54, p.73)

   3) Is there a natural route of development? Is this route the same or different from that reported in L1 acquisition? (pp.54-72)

4. Variability in Interlanguage (pp. 75-98)

   1) Try to describe Figure 4.1.(p.76)

   2) Learner performance varies according to the nature of the task. How could we collect L2 data? (pp.87-90)

   3) How could we describe the interlanguage variability? (pp.90-93)

   4) Variability plays an important role in the process of L2 development. Each stage of L2 development consists of the rearrangement of a previous variable system into a new variable system. How does this take place? (pp.94-96)

5. Individual Learner Differences and Second Language Acquisition (pp.99-126 )

   1) How do you classify learner factors? (pp.100-101)  Try to describe Figure 5.2. (p.124)

   2) Do individual factors contribute to the rate at which the learner progresses along the natural route and to the overall level of proficiency achieved? Why? (pp.101-122)

   3) In your opinion, what makes a good language learner? (pp.122-123)

6. Input, Interaction, and Second Language Acquisition (pp.127-163 )

   1) There are three different views on the role of input in language acquisition: the behaviorist, the nativist, and the interactionist views. Which view is the most acceptable? Why? (pp.127-132)

   2) How do you compare natural and classroom language environments? (pp.149-152)

   3) Is SLA affected by the quality and quantity of the input and interaction? If so, how does input and interaction affect the route and rate of SLA? (pp.152-162)

7. Learner Strategies (pp. 164-189)

   1) How do you understand learning strategies? (pp.167-175)

   2) Try to describe Figure 7.3. (p177)

   3) Read Table 7.2 (pp.90-93) carefully. Please give an example to each communication strategy. Can you add more communication strategies to the table? (pp.184-185)

8. The Universal Hypotheses and Second Language Acquisition (pp.190-214 )

   1) What is the Universal Hypothesis? According to the Universal Hypothesis, how do linguistic universals determine the course of SLA? (pp.191-210, pp.270-71)

   2) Introduce markedness theory. What is the relationship between markedness theory and L1 transfer? (pp.206-210)

9. The Role of Formal Instruction in Second Language Acquisition (pp. 215-247)

   1) State the effects of formal instruction on the route of SLA (pp.218-224)

   2) What are the effects of formal instruction on the rate/success of SLA? (pp.224-229)

   3) How do you explain the role of instruction? (pp.229-241)

10.   Theories of Second Language Acquisition (pp.248-282 )

   1) Introduce the Monitor Model of SLA. (pp.261-266)

   2) Read Table 10.2 (p.277). What is your favorite SLA theory? Why?

   3) To account for what is known about SLA, Rod Ellis develops a framework (Figure 10.4, p.276) and a set of hypotheses (pp.278-280). What is your opinion about the framework and the hypotheses? Do you agree with Rod Ellis?

Conclusion  (pp.283-291 )
